The Llano Estacado is home to nearly 20,000 playa lakes, the headwaters of several major rivers, and overlies one of the world’s largest aquifers. Urban playas such as the one at Clapp Park are significant green spaces for stormwater management, human recreation and wildlife habitat. ‘Rain Crossing’ was conceived as part of a green infrastructure project targeted at slowing down, spreading out, and soaking in rainwater runoff into the soil. As visitors physically intersect with the path of rain, they are invited to contemplate the story of water in a semi-arid landscape. This place-based public artwork serves as an abstract expression of water, humans, and landscape.
